Helping Those Who Help: Delivering Field Response Training that Creates Impact
The Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities is offering this free training which covers the following topics:
- Short segment on the National Incident Management System
- The biology of stress and its impact on behavior
- Initial disaster mental health response
- Needs assessment and the FEMA Crisis Counseling Program
- Information on psychological first aid interventions
- Triage assessment and referral
- Self-care.

Purpose
To provide basic information and skills that prepare disaster behavioral health responders to meet the practical and emotional needs of disaster survivors and the people who come to their aid.
Objectives
- To identify the fundamental principles of the emergency response structure
- To compare standard mental health treatment with disaster mental health response
- To discuss the processes and interventions appropriate for disaster mental health response
- To construct a personal system of disaster self-care
- To practice skills learned through participation in a simulation event
